I Totally Know.

Yes, I know. I know, I know, I know. My “friend” told me just yesterday that I’m most likely going to blogger hell for ignoring all of you and failing to post for upwards of a month. Can’t a girl take a vacation?

Ha ha ha. Because I’m just working full time and organizing camp schedules and writing a book and trying to get an agent and volunteeringย as communications director for a military spouse organization and carting cars full of saddles to horse shows and ย … did I mention Husband is gone for all of this?

Fine. I know, I know, I know. I KNOW.

Hey, at least you had power, which is more than most of SE Ohio could say for the last two weeks. That storm front that went through blacked-out not only our entire town (except for 4 lucky households, mine included), but shut down the wi-fi Internet access for us as well.
So you want margaritas in Hell? Gimme a yell just before you get to the gates – I’ll be sure to have them made and the glasses properly chilled. (Yeah, I’ve already been fitted for a red Union suit and pitchfork, got my passport, the whole bit. I’ve had ’em for – let’s see, I’m coming up on 50 – about 49 1/2 years now. ๐Ÿ˜€ )

Yes, I want margaritas in hell, please. I’m sure they were invented there.

And OH YEAH that’s it! My power has been out. In fact, it’s still out …

Well, shoot, if power being out is an excuse, my power went out shortly after Christmas last year. Right around the time I realised I was living my last year as a forty-something, That wooshing sound you hear is my near-lightspeed-approach on the big 5-oh. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ
My only comfort? The fact my wife gets there first. Though I am trying to be adult about it. I try not to say “Neener, neener, you’re gonna be an old fart first!” ๐Ÿ˜€
(Ahem.) Like I said, I’m trying. Just ask the wife – she’ll gladly tell you I am VERY trying…… ๐Ÿ˜‰

Actually, considering I spent my 40th birthday in 2002 flat on my back, drugged to the gills, lying in our friends’ guest bedroom here in Ohio (which was our new home, after just losing ours in Chicago), barely able to function, my 50th birthday is gonna be FAN-dang-TASTIC by comparison, no matter HOW much of me ain’t working! ๐Ÿ˜€

This is the part where you mention an injury …

Sorry I haven’t gotten back to you sooner, my ISP managed to fry one of their wi-fi towers “making adjustments following the recent power outages”. Whatever THAT means – all I know is, they killed my access on Friday the 13th. Figures, right?
Gee, I knew what I was talking about, why didn’t YOU? ๐Ÿ˜‰ Not so much an injury, as a set of on-again off-again migraines that hit in 1999 and haven’t left. And were intense enough to turn me into a zombie, during which time I lost my job, then my house, then my beloved “son”, my Border Collie named Red Dwarf. (That name is a story in itself. ๐Ÿ˜€ ) Net result, I ended up penniless and without a home, and some friends down here in SE Ohio offered us a guest room in their house. We moved down in early 2002, so my 40th birthday was spent in exile from my home town (suburbs of Chicago), drugged to the hilt, and with literally no future. We now own a house, my wife has a couple good part-time jobs (the drugs don’t let me work regularly), and we’re slowly rebuilding our lives.
In other words, unless those crazy Mayans are right, I’ll turn 50 doing a HECK of a lot better than 40!
(Yes, that WAS the short version! ๐Ÿ˜€ )

OMG, don’t bring up the Mayans. I can only imagine the search engine generation from that term. (Doh, now I did it!)

Turning the page – I’m genuinely sorry, John. I recently had the good fortune of “meeting” Carl Prine, the editor/journalist over at military.com’s Line of Departure, and a Marine who, after his stint with 60 Minutes, went into the National Guard, got banged up in Iraq, and came home with similar migraines. He’s having a similar bout and you can read about it here: http://www.lineofdeparture.com/2012/07/03/goodbye.

I’ve been contemplating how to write about it. But I haven’t figured it out, yet. It scares me and makes me want to cry.

Well … I haven’t about Carl Prine’s ordeal yet (I will later, after the war of the inbox), and I’m not a veteran, but if you want a guest post from the point of view of a man with migraines, I’ll be glad to throw something together. (It’s kinda like a guy getting breast cancer – you have to batter down the walls of sexist sniggering before you can even START to figure out what to do.)
About the only good thing about the headaches are the GREAT drugs you can get! ๐Ÿ˜€

    Lori,
I understand. Iโ€™m working on a sequel to An Odyssey of Illusions, trying to promote that first book, getting ready to promote the sequel, managing a garden and yard too big, drafting still another short story, trying to decide if blogging is in my best interest, etc. And, our kids are grown and gone.
Be real in your prioritizing and try to not burn out.
