On Not Winning

This weekend I stood awkwardly amongst bloggers, waiting nervously for the results of the annual Milblog Award for which Witty Little Secret had been nominated. We all huddled in the wind at the Navy Memorial, taking advantage of the light cascading from the nearby National Archives.

I quickly realized just how long some of these folks had been writing in this strange online medium, and I was definitely the newcomer of the group (which made the award nomination all the more humbling). Each time someone asked whether I was a blogger, I hesitated.  “Um. Okay, yeah. I’m a blogger. That’s what I am.”

The winner of the spouse blog category for which I was nominated was Katie Rye. She writes a heart-felt story about the continuing recovery of her husband after a traumatic and nearly fatal car accident, wrought at the hands of a drunk driver. The blog “Katie and Ben” is first and foremost a love story, but it’s also an unyeilding testament of faith, strength, and most of all perseverance.

I would be lying if I said I didn’t care. That it didn’t matter whether I won. But I can’t think of a better blog to lose to.

And by the way nobody, I mean NOBODY showed up to the conference in their jammies. Not once. I swear.

I just wanted to let you know that I stumbled across your blog a week or so ago and it is the first milspouse blog I’ve read that I actually enjoyed! My husband deployed about the same time as yours and so I can really relate to the swings of emotion. He is National Guard, so I can also relate to feeling like I am not really part of the military community as the Army is not normally a very big part of our life. Whenever I get a free moment, I find myself looking back on old posts…slowly I am catching myself up!

Anyways, just wanted to let you know that I’ve really enjoyed reading…I’ve laughed like crazy and (maybe) cried a little too. Thanks…

Thanks, Julie. I had a chance to discuss this very issue with some folks at The Pentagon this weekend. You are not alone, and I am working on a way to connect us all. Thank you for reading.
